10 Clever Winter Hacks For Your Car

Spokane experiences all four seasons pretty distinctly, which is often one of the many reasons people love living here. But it also makes enduring the wintertime a bit more of a chore than other locations that don't experience the seasons so drastically.

What it comes down to is - Spokane gets snow...a lot of it...for pretty much all of December, January, and February. That means three whole months worth of dealing with frozen windshields and doors, slippery roads, and getting stuck in the snow. Try a few of these winter hacks for your car to stay ahead of the season!

  1. Quickly melt ice on your windows during winter by spraying a mixture of 2/3 vinegar and 1/3 water.
  2. Run the AC while defrosting the windshield (AC is dry, it will dehumidify as it cools). Cold? Adjust the temperature so that the AC pumps out warm air.
  3. Add hand sanitizer to your key for instant door de-icing.
  4. Use toothpaste on old foggy headlights to buff them like new.
  5. Don't let your gas go below half a tank. Your car is a source of heat if stranded.
  6. Check your tire pressure. Tire pressure changes with temperature changes.
    • Use the penny trick! Stick a penny in the tread...if Lincoln's head disappears, you're good to go!
  7. Fill an old sock with cat litter and place it on your dashboard. It will absorb the moisture that creates fog.
  8. Use your car floor mats under your wheel(s) for more traction if you're stuck in the snow.
  9. Wrap your side mirrors with plastic bags after parking to keep your mirrors ice/snow free.
  10. Wrap your windshield wipers with old socks/towels to keep them from freezing to the window.

Bonus tip: Park your car facing East whenever you can so the sun can naturally defrost your windows in the morning.
