Take a Vacation in Your Own Backyard!

Well, not literally in your own backyard, but having a fun summer vacation can take place right here in Spokane! As the summer draws to a close, you might notice your kids getting a little antsy trying to fill their time. We want them to enjoy these last few weeks of summer and live them to their fullest! So here are a few fun, inexpensive/free ideas to keep them smiling and laughing in the sun.

Farmer’s Markets. Between Spokane and it’s surrounding cities, we have Farmer’s Markets practically every day. It’s the perfect way to get the family outside, eating healthy, and supporting our local market. Here’s a list of a few surrounding Farmer’s Markets to check out:

Hiking Trails. There are few places that are as beautiful as Washington during the summer months. We’ve got countless surrounding hiking routes ranging from long distances to short ones. As seen from the American Hiking Society website, “Hiking is essential to connect people with nature, conserve open space, provide biological corridors for diverse plants and wildlife, and for the health of Americans and our natural environment.” Here are a list of a few trailheads to try out that are family friendly:

  • Riverside State Park—Bowl and Pitcher
  • Dishman Hills Natural Area
  • Little Spokane River Natural Area
  • Iller Creek Trail Head
  • Finch Arboretum
  • Palisades Park
  • Columbia Plateau Trail—Fish Lake
  • Slavin Pond Loop
  • Mt. Spokane Park
  • Tubbs Hill
  • Mirabeau Park

Free Summer Movies. Spokane offers a variety of free movies to choose from that are kid friendly. And some are even outdoors!

The Shop in the Perry District hosts free outdoor movie nights every Saturday evening during the summer months. They update their movie showings weekly on their Facebook page. Check them out here!

The Garland Theater presents free summer movies every week throughout the summer! Here’s the list of their upcoming ones.

Free Bowling. Did you know there’s a whole website dedicated to kids bowling for free? Yup, it’s called “Kids Bowl Free” and you can have access to free games at local places like Lilac Lanes, North Bowl and Valley Bowl. All you have to do is visit their website here and register!

Silverwood Theme Park. Okay, so we know this one isn’t for free. But we can at least help you out a little bit. Use the code 2017FUN at checkout and you’ll get up to $9 off each ticket!

Wonderland Family Fun Center. Every Tuesday, our friends over at Wonderland have $15 Buck Tuesdays where you can take advantage of their laser tag, black light mini golf, outdoor mini golf and rock wall for $15 and add unlimited go-karts and bumper boats for just $5 more. It’s so easy to find a good deal there and there’s endless fun for the kiddos!
