Best Credit Unions to Work For

In 2015, we received some very exciting news: Spokane Federal Credit Union was selected one of the best credit unions to work for according to the Credit Union Journal.  (Insert happy dance!)  "Receiving this award is validating and means we're focusing on the things that are important to our team,” -Megan Shover, Human Resources Director.  The publication awarded 45 credit unions nationwide with this honor in their second annual ranking of the Best Credit Unions to Work For.

Susan Blain, President and CEO, had this to say: "It is very rewarding to know everyone enjoys our culture and feels ownership in making this a great place to work. I'm proud we're able to offer a work/life balance with benefits staff find meaningful. It is an honor to achieve this award and I’m thankful to have an awesome team to work with. It is through them that we achieve our success!"

2015 Best Credit Unions to Work For
Press Release

Spokane Federal Credit Union has been named one of the 2015 Best Credit Unions to Work For. Credit Union Journal has partnered with Best Companies Group to identify companies that have excelled in creating quality workplaces for employees.

The survey and awards program are designed to identify, recognize and honor the best credit unions.

Determining the Best Credit Unions to Work For involved a two-step process. The first step consisted of evaluating each participating credit union’s workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of employee surveys aimed at assessing the experiences and attitudes of individual employees with respect to their workplace. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the best credit unions and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final ranking.

Q & A with Megan, SpoFed's Human Resource Director

Q: You've worked for other companies--what makes Spokane Federal Credit Union special?

A: I joined Spokane Federal Credit Union in early 2014 and have been excited about our culture and the great benefits and perks that we offer our employees since day one. For example, our management team selects a day when we cook breakfast for everyone.  Our staff look forward to it every year.

Q: What are some other ways that you celebrate, play and have fun at work?

A: In July, we hosted a luau themed potluck which included Hawaiian shirts, leis and traditional music (think Don Ho). There is also "FISH! Day"  where employees work while participating in work-centric games and activities.  On Fridays, a member of the FISH! Committee hands out thank you notes that were written by staff during the week to express appreciation to their co-workers.

Q: How does Spokane Federal Credit Union embrace continuing education and leader development?

A:  The Credit Union budgets an allowance for travel and conference expenses, which allows selected management and non-management employees to attend industry specific and job specific conferences, workshops and training events.  We've had five staff members who have taken part in the Northwest Credit Union Association's Emerging Leaders program in 2014 and 2015. In addition, three employees were selected to participate (and have since graduated) from the Credit Union National Association's  Management School.  We're committed to providing time away from the office as well as financial support, when needed, for all of these activities. When it's important to those individuals, it's important to the Credit Union and is a win for everyone.

Q: Any final thoughts?

A:  What makes this award so meaningful is that staff input is confidential and accounts for 75% of the score.  It confirms that we're on the right track.
