“School’s out for summer, school’s out forever!” Well not the second part, but the first part is very true! My school’s been out for over a month now, but I know most schools just finished for the summer, so naturally, job searches shall follow! Here’s some of the advice I’ve acquired from my own experiences with job searching.
- Networking is everything in the work place these days. Start talking to friends and family to find possible job openings. If you have an “in” at a company, you are much more likely to get an interview!
- Re-vamp your resume. Building your resume into an easy-to-read yet detailed format will raise the bar with any employer. Make sure to TRIPLECHECK your work. Resume’s should
have no grammatical errors.
- Online job searches are a great way to find out companies that are currently seeking a new employee. Since the job is open already, there is more chance you will get called for an interview! If you are a Spokanite, there are websites like workspokane.org that allow you to search for job openings in the Spokane area. But if you’re from a different part of town, like most WSU students, there are websites like WorkSource for Washington, Monster.com, and Indeed.com where you can do the same thing but your search will be for your particular area. Also, check for jobs on government websites like the city or county. They may have internships in the field of study you’re getting your degree in.
Keep in mind that this is just a summer job, so if you end up doing something simple and not in your field of study, that’s completely normal. Simply having a job will give you more experience with customer service and team work which are necessary in any work environment!
Also, don’t forget to have fun this summer. Sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine, school is hard enough! However, hopefully you find a job that you both enjoy and that allows some free time for summer fun.
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and I hope wherever you decide to spend it, it brings you a good time.
